Libor Rouček, S&D vice-president for neighbourhood and enlargement policies, said:

"The democratic and transparent conduct of the elections is another important step for Georgia on its way towards Europe.

"After last year's peaceful transfer of power through parliamentary elections - itself a rare and historic occasion in the region - Sunday's presidential elections further confirm and consolidate Georgia's progress. It shows that the country's democracy is maturing.

"The S&D Group strongly supports Georgia's European integration process and looks forward to the initialling and swift signature thereafter of the Association and 'Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreements (DCFTA)'."
